Mã:Within Temptation & The Metropole Orchestra - Black Symphony 2008 AVC 1080i DTS 5.1 Formed in 1996 around the nucleus of guitarist Robert Westerholt and vocalist Sharon den Adel, Within Temptation have build a solid reputation as one of Europe's most successful Gothic Rock acts over the course of 4 albums with a myriad of Gold and Platinum certifications. More plaudits followed in 2006 with Within Temptation receiving the Dutch Export Award ("Best International Selling Artist") for the third consecutive time in a row and a Golden God Award from the UK's Metal Hammer magazine for Best Video. Within Temptation once again proved themselves as peerless purveyors of quality Gothic-tinged rock with the release of their latest album "The Heart Of Everything" - their debut UK Top 40 release. Having already sold out their biggest UK tour in Nov 2007, the band staged their most ambitious concert to date at Rotterdam's Ahoy Arena in Feb 2008. Dubbed "Black Symphony", the band performed to 10,000 fans with the 60-piece Metropole Orchestra and a 20-voice classical choir, as well as on-stage performers and stunning pyrotechnic and lighting effects. Special guests on the night included Keith Caputo (Life Of Agony) and Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering).

The Pyongyang Concert - New York Philharmonic & Lorin Maazel 2008 Blu-ray 1080i AVC LPCM 5.1

Mã:The Pyongyang Concert Blu-ray Review Reviewed by Dr. Svet Atanasov, October 22, 2008 On February 26, 2008 The New York Philharmonic and Maestro Lorin Maazel performed a terrific concert in Pyongyang, North Korea. In front of party and military officials a group of musicians managed to do what politics failed to achieve during the last sixty years – bring people from two very different worlds together. I am unsure what I could say about The Pyongyang Concert which has not already been mentioned in newspapers, magazines, and TV shows around the world. Ten months ago the New York Philharmonic staged a concert in North Korea that managed to initiate a type of dialog politicians have been struggling to produce for years. Through the works of Wagner (Lohengrin: Prelude to Act III), Dvorak (Symphony No.9 in E minor, From the New Word), Gershwin (An American in Paris), Bizet (Farandole from L'arlesienne Suite No. 2), and Bernstein (Candide: Overture) ordinary people who did not know what to expect from each other ended up laughing, smiling, waiving at each other, and hugging each other temporarily forgetting about the differences that separate them. For a few hours music was a language everyone spoke. This is a surreal experience folks! In fact, I don't know if I have ever witnessed anything like it. The only other performance that I've seen where people appeared to be so genuinely moved by the power of music is the grandiose spectacle Pink Floyd staged to celebrate the unification of Germany in the early 90s. There was something in the air of that cold Berlin night that words cannot describe – a powerful mix of joy, satisfaction, and ecstasy which those who saw the show will never forget. Yes, you could argue that the Pyongyang concert isn't comparable – North Korea is still a communist state, its people are still isolated from the rest of the world, and after the New York Philharmonic left nothing really changed. Well, maybe. Maybe change is happening as I write this review. Maybe a year from now people will be pointing to this historic concert as the precursor of a political thawing that brought a different type of leadership in North Korea. I am convinced that music can bring people together. This concert proves it. Music is a language everyone understands and regardless of cultural, ethnic, religious or political differences through music people can find a way to overcome their differences. I know that disingenuous writers have transformed the above statement into a cliché you are probably weary of seeing, but, believe me, when spoken with an open heart the language of music is capable of producing miracles. As I mentioned earlier I spent a lot of time studying the faces of those who were listening to the music of the New York Philharmonic. So much in fact that I ignored what I typically pay attention to: the quality of music. Not because I was not moved by the sounds that were coming off my speakers but because my mind was elsewhere. I could not stop thinking how all of the differences that separate us could be erased in a matter of hours, as long as there is a will to reach out and embrace those we disagree with. Finally, I wish to specifically comment on the last piece that was performed during the concert, a piece I heard for the first time on this disc. It is titled Arirang and it is apparently loved by both North and South Koreans. It is a sublime, deeply moving, composition where a lonely piccolo theme leads the orchestra in a magnificent fashion. As mentioned in the documentary supplied on this disc Arirang was arranged by Meastro Maazel specifically for the Pyongyang concert and judging by the teary eyes seen in the audience it was an unprecedented success. Presented in an aspect ratio of 1.78:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC, and granted a "live" 1080i transfer The Pyongyang Concert arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Medici Arts (Euroarts). The overall quality of this historic concert isn't what one could describe as "reference" but it isn't disappointing either. The overhead shots capturing the New York Philharmonic as well as the close-ups following the expert conducing of Maestro Maazel are certainly pleasing. I was able to see clearly the facial expressions of those sitting in the audience (each time the camera zoomed) as well and quite a few times I caught myself looking closer to see exactly what sort of affect the music of Wagner, Bizet, and Gershwin had amongst the North Korean officials - the video presentation Medici Arts offer certainly allows one to get a good grasp of what the mood in the hall was. Contrast in particular isn't problematic. The lighting throughout the concert is excellent and as a result detail and clarity are very pleasing. I personally was not disturbed by the presence of the dreaded "jaggies" which tent to pop up on "live" transfers every once in awhile as none of these were noticeable here. Furthermore, the actual transfer does not reveal any serious technical issues either. As far as I am concerned The Pyongyang Concert looks as good as I was hoping it would and this Blu-ray release certainly allows for an unusual viewing experience to say the least.
