Just like every popular brand is copied, another trend by the Chinese is building players and then just go using someone else's firmware. These products are attractive as cost only a fraction of the original players in most cases however come with some risks of importing. So it became recently known that several brands are using other companies software illegally and although the matter can be discussed in the same way products are copied or people are downloading content (that's life), there are a few concerns buyers must keep in mind dealing with these brands...
* Support is very unsure as eventually they will not be able to keep copying software as brands provide safer mechanisms leading to your inability to flash your player with updates
* The firmware will often not be fully functional especially in HD audio
* Importing overseas is a risk always and not always a good deal
Brands so far known/suspected to use firmware from other brands by their own doing:
Kaiboer K8,
Sbaid BD-8,
HDMEI M3,
eGreat EG-S2
Sbaid BD-100C,
Pulanda BD-100C,
Kaiboer HDMAX BD-200,
iStar BDP-S600

Obviously, we do want to warn users for these products and the risk they take of bricking the players eventually or fall short of updates. We know from several brands new safety measures are being taken that may or may not brick the players using their software illegally...
Especially seeing eGreat in this list of known copycats is not surprising. We had a collision with them a year ago about copying PCH players and selling it as originals (we stopped it since we did not want users to end up with fake PCH's). Surprisingly Kaiboer is on this list as well, a brand we used to work with... I wonder, should we investigate this further...? Nah...
We just want to inform you of the things going on and by whom...
So be alert to possible fakes when importing goods from China, eBay sites and so on... If anyone has info on this story from brands, you're welcome to keep us posted...
