Vietnam has decided to adopt Japan’s shinkansen bullet train system for its project to build a north-south high-speed railway in the country, officials knowledgeable about the situation revealed Friday.
Vietnam’s decision was delivered to Japan when Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung met with his Japanese counterpart Yukio Hatoyama on the sidelines of the first summit meeting between Japan and five Mekong-region countries in Tokyo in early November, they said. The decision will mark a major advance for the Japanese business community which had been calling on Vietnam to adopt Japan’s bullet train system."

Vietnam has decided to adopt Japan's Shinkansen bullet train system for a high-speed rail project linking Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's planning and investment minister said Thursday in Tokyo.
The minister, Vo Hong Phuc, informed Yoshito Sengoku, Japan's state minister in charge of national policy, of the decision.
Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama promoted the bid when he met Monday in Washington with his Vietnamese counterpart, Nguyen Tan Dung.
In Thursday's talks, Phuc asked Japanese government officials for financial assistance to enable construction of the railway system.
Sengoku said that Japan plans to expand its exports of infrastructure projects, such as the Shinkansen system and nuclear power plants, as part of moves to curb global warming.
Vietnam expects to spend more than 5 trillion yen ($54 billion) to build the 1,600-kilometer north-south high-speed rail system. The first phase is expected to open for service in 2020. The entire line should be fully operational in 2035. "
